User Experience Designer

Remote (United States)Full timeMaxiCare LLC

Shape how MaxiCare works, looks, and feels for nurses, administrators, and billing staff, from research with facility staff to designs that ship.

About MaxiCare

MaxiCare is an AI native EMR platform built for operators of skilled nursing and assisted living facilities. The tagline says it plainly: the EMR that thinks. We are an early stage company that moves fast, building product alongside our first cohort of facility partners. The team is small, and the work is real.

About the role

We are looking for a User Experience Designer to make MaxiCare work better, look better, and feel better in the hands of the people who use it every day. A nurse at the start of a double shift. An administrator watching census. A billing lead chasing a claim before month end. Your job is to give each of them an experience that is clear, quick, and genuinely pleasant to use, and to make MaxiCare the product our clients are glad they chose.

Here is how we think about the work. User experience design is not mostly about how a product looks. It is about how the product works once it is in the user's hands. In healthcare that matters more than almost anywhere else, because the job is information: taking it in, making sense of it, and acting on it. An EMR can bury a nurse in data and still fail to tell her the one thing she needs right now. We want a designer who clears out that noise, strips each screen down to what matters, and leaves the user with a clear, actionable next step.

Visual craft still counts. Type, color, spacing, and hierarchy are how a screen tells someone where to look first. In this role they serve the work rather than decorate it.

You will report to the VP of Product Management and work daily with product and engineering. You will sit in on research with facility staff, turn what you learn into flows and prototypes in Figma, and stay with the work until it ships and people are actually using it.

What you will own

  • Product experience. You own how MaxiCare works, looks, and feels across the application, from the first login to the hundredth charting session of the week. You find the friction, you design it out, and you raise the bar for what a clinical product can feel like.

  • Information design. Healthcare runs on information, and too much of it gets in the way. You decide what shows up on each screen, in what order, and what stays out of sight until someone asks for it. You design for the decision the user has to make, not for the full data set sitting behind it.

  • User research. You spend time with nurses, administrators, MDS coordinators, and billing staff to learn how they really work. You run interviews, watch workflows, test prototypes, and bring what you learn back to product and engineering in a form they can act on.

  • Workflows and interaction design. You map the core workflows, such as admission, charting, medication administration, care planning, and billing, then design the flows, wireframes, and interactive prototypes that make them faster and harder to get wrong.

  • Visual design and the design system. You own typography, color, iconography, spacing, and layout for on screen use. You build and maintain the MaxiCare design system in Figma so engineering ships consistent components every time.

  • Accessibility and usability. You design to WCAG 2.2 AA and make sure the product works for users of different abilities, on different devices, and under the dim lighting of a nursing station at 3 a.m. You run usability testing and turn what it finds into fixes.

  • Engineering handoff. You deliver specs, annotated designs, and component documentation that engineers can build from without guessing. You review what ships and hold the line on quality.

  • Experience metrics. You define how we measure a good experience. Time to complete common tasks, error rates, clicks per workflow, adoption, and user satisfaction. You watch those numbers and use them to decide what to fix next.

  • Client experience beyond the app. Where it helps, you bring the same standard to onboarding screens, training materials, help content, and client-facing documents, so the MaxiCare experience holds together everywhere a client touches it.

  • Other duties as assigned. This is an early-stage company. Roles shift as the business grows, and you will move where the work is.

What success looks like

The User Experience Designer succeeds when a nurse at the end of a double shift can finish charting without having to think about the screen.

Requirements

  • Experience. At least five years of user experience or product design work at a professional product development firm or product company, with shipped software to show for it.

  • SaaS product design. Required. Hands-on design of SaaS platforms, with work across both B2B and B2C products. You understand the difference between designing for a professional who lives in a tool all day and a consumer who opens an app once a week.

  • Portfolio. A portfolio that shows your process, not just finished screens. We want to see the problem, the research, the options you weighed, what you chose, and what happened after it shipped.

  • Tool proficiency. Expert in Figma, including components, variants, auto layout, and prototyping. Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop and Illustrator.

  • Typography and color. A keen understanding of fonts, type systems, and color schemes built for on-screen presentation. You know how size, weight, contrast, and color affect legibility, and why that matters to a nurse scanning a long list of residents.

  • Usability and accessibility. Working experience with usability testing and accessibility standards, including WCAG, and a record of building accessibility into products from the start rather than bolting it on at the end.

  • Information design. Proven skill at simplifying complex, data-heavy interfaces. You can take a screen with forty data points and work out which four matter.

  • Engineering collaboration. Experience working inside agile teams, handing designs off to engineers, and working through the tradeoffs between the ideal design and what can ship this sprint.

  • AI tool fluency. Comfort using AI tools as part of your daily workflow, Anthropic Claude in particular. We use AI throughout our process, and you should be working with it, not around it.

  • Communication. Strong written and verbal communication. You can explain a design decision to a nurse, an engineer, and the CEO and make it land with each of them.

  • Language. Native English speaker. You will write interface copy, labels, and help content, and you will lead research sessions with facility staff, where precise wording matters.

  • Education. A four-year college degree from an accredited institution, ideally in design, human-computer interaction, or a related field.

  • Citizenship. U.S. citizen. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Preferred

  • Healthcare product design experience, especially EMR, EHR, clinical workflow, or other regulated healthcare software.

  • Experience designing for skilled nursing, long-term care, or other clinical settings where users work in shifts and under time pressure.

  • Experience designing AI-assisted features. MaxiCare is AI native, and how people read, trust, and act on AI output is a design problem we care about.

  • Familiarity with HIPAA and designing for privacy in healthcare products.

  • Experience building a design system from scratch at an early-stage company.

  • Enough front-end fluency in HTML, CSS, and TypeScript to talk through implementation details with engineers.

Logistics

  • Location. Fully remote within the United States.

  • Travel. As requested and needed, including occasional on site team meetings where we work through product design and architecture strategy together. Expect periodic facility visits for user research as well, and some trips may come up on short notice.

  • Camera-on policy. We are a remote team, and we hold our online meetings on camera. Any video call requires the camera to be on. That applies to internal meetings, customer calls, research sessions, and design reviews. Real-time presence matters when the team is distributed.

  • Reporting structure. Reports directly to the VP of Product Management. Partners closely with engineering, product, and the CEO.

  • Employment type. Full-time, exempt.

What we offer

  • Unlimited vacation. We do not count days. Take the time you need to rest and come back sharp, coordinated with your team so the work keeps moving.

  • Career growth. MaxiCare is an AI first company, and this seat puts your hands on how one gets built. You will work every day inside sophisticated product design where AI is part of the architecture, the workflow, and the product itself. The skills you build here are the ones the next decade of software will run on, and you will grow them alongside a small team that is shaping the product from the ground up.

  • Holiday gathering. Once a year the whole team comes together in person for a holiday gathering. It is our chance to celebrate the year and spend time together away from the screen.

  • Health and fitness. We cover 50 percent of a monthly fitness and health club membership. Details are discussed during the interview process.

Compensation

Competitive base compensation calibrated to the experience you bring and the market in your jurisdiction, plus performance based annual bonus participation tied to individual and company results. Specifics are discussed during the interview process.
